Despite strong evidence for the value of the doctor-patient relationship, hospitalized patients typically receive care from physicians they do not know. An important reason for this is that patients’ regular doctors generally have too few hospitalized patients to justify their daily presence in the hospital. In response to this problem, physician and economist David Meltzer (LAB’82, AM’87, PhD’92, MD’93) has developed the Comprehensive Care Physician Model in which doctors focus their practice on patients at increased risk of hospitalization, providing them enough hospitalized patients on a daily basis to whom they may provide both hospital and ambulatory care. The model was tested with a 2,000-person randomized trial at the University of Chicago. Results to date suggest large improvements in patient experience, health outcomes, and health care utilization and costs. These findings have spurred efforts to disseminate and extend the model locally, across the United States, and internationally.

Interested attendees are encouraged to read Meltzer’s paper on this topic, coauthored with UChicago physician Gregory Ruhnke.
